Profit Slides on Soft Sales, but Cisco Stays Upbeat
Published: August 10, 2011
A revamping is expected to take time to lift the company’s results.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/11/technology/ciscos-profit-falls.html

Well folks, even Cisco is not immune to these economically challenging times. I had no idea that as early as 2004, I think Mr. Chambers was asking himself questions like, “Why is Google developing their own hardware?" and "How can I continue to grow a $40b company at 12%-17% annually?"

The answer seems to be in the merger that will give them access to international markets. Ironically, my very first post was about Cisco pertaining to relevance to in the international market.

I got a kick out of this video on Youtube. Taking a break from this blog and considering whether or not to continue has caused me some concern as the times, they are a changin'... and Cisco seems to be keeping up after it seemed they might lose a set or two to all the attention on cloud computing. Now Cisco Systems is embracing it with "Cisco Master Managed and Cloud Provider Certifications". Though Quest has achieved this newly coveted title, I still wonder who would want to read about it if it weren't in a video upload on YouTube. Google showed it's recognition of the popularity of video by purchasing YouTube. Unless you have a vested interest in Cisco Systems, (which I do not, believe it or not), or just use them as a barometer of the technical weather, you probably don't care about this development. (Present company and all techies out there excluded, of course). My God, I don't want to alienate my few precious readers who stumble upon my blog. I know this is a "no-no", to be so critical of my own blog. Guess I am just a little discouraged. It is sooooo fiercely competitive out there, while at the same time, there seems to be room for all of us bloggers and commentators. Lots to read, lots of great stuff online these days and I sense it’s about to take another quantum leap with multi-platform databases, SQL seems to be on steroids these days. Video popularity going through the roof, now seems as if it's popularity alone is driving the whole thing! Anyway, lets not take ourselves too seriously, kick back and laugh at Cisco trying to be cool.

Port or Socket? "Networking 101: Port vs Socket"

I had always thought of a socket as something to do exclusively with software and a port having to do with either hardware and/or software.

The End of an Era; Farewell Steve Jobs. Thanks for The iMemories.

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple is dead

"Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts. [Apple]
Steve Jobs, co-founder and till recently the chief executive officer of Apple Inc (a AAPL) has passed away, news that was confirmed by Apple minutes ago. More to follow."

My 2 Cents:
I feel the end of an era has come with Microsoft's Bill Gates leaving his empire building firm a few years ago and now, the other shoe has fallen. Steve Jobs' reign as The Apple King has passed away. Having worked for Apple for a short time, fresh out of Tech School for PC's, (I know, I know, it's along story), I cannot say I approved of the way the company treated us compared to Microsoft’s Googlesque treatment of its crème de la crème.

But all due respect is, in fact, due to Steve Jobs who decided that the MSB, ( most significant bit), would be the first one read by the hard drive, not the LSB, (least significant bit), as all PC’s read data. This, we were told in tech school, was the fundamental difference between Mac and PC and hence, why they could not run, (at least when I was in school), each other’s programs. Of course that has all changed and there is much, much more distinction between Mac and PC these days as you most likely already know. Sorry to sound glib or over simplify the life’s work of a truly magnificent man, of who’s proverbial boot straps I am not worthy to loosen. Maybe it hasn’t sunken in yet.

It begs the question, how’s it gonna be without you, (Steve Jobs)?

Not Your Mother’s Connected World

Interop New York: Bright Lights, Big Network and How to Manage it All

New York City always has lots going on, but if you’re heading there next week, don’t miss all the great activities we have going on at Interop 2011. We’ll be focusing on several timely IT trends and issues, but our top billing will be Bring Your Own Device.
In fact, if you saw my blog from the past week, "Not Your Mother’s Connected World", you might remember one of the statistics I cited from our "2011 Cisco Connected World Technology Report": Two-thirds of students (66%) and more than half of employees (58%) cite a mobile device (laptop, smartphone, tablet) as “the most important technology in their lives.” This attitude, plus the overall proliferation of mobile devices up the ante for IT managers as they look to find new ways of managing the network.
To see what else we have in store in for you next week, watch the video below.

My 2 Cents:

I am disappointed that I was not able to attend as it was an incredible event we all should try to attend if posible. Especially when, (as I learned the day of), one of my LinkedIn Group Leaders had posted that anyone with in his group had been extended a free admission! Stay tuned and check out Desktop Support Professionals group on LinkedIn.
